As previously stated, the most damaging flood at Las Animas
and vicinity occurred on June 4, 1921. According to residents who
were living there at the time, nearly the entire city was flooded.
The water was 4 to 5 feet deep in some places. A recurrence of the
1921 flood under the existing state of development with Barrier Dam
in operation would cause damages estimated at $3,135,000, as listed
in table 4. With the authorized Pueblo Dam in operation, the peak
discharge of a flood of th is magnitude wou Id be reduced to 108,000
c.f.s. and the damages therefrom would amount to $2,490,000. The
largest flood experienced at Las Animas since 1921 occurred on May 20,
1955, with an estimated peak discharge of 44,000 c.f.s. Residents
hasti Iy constructed a short levee and succeeded in keeping the damage
to a nominal figure. Since 1957 the streambed opposite the city has
aggraded appreciably; consequently, if the same discharge occurred at
the present time the stage wou I d be higher.
