<br />Zone AO <br /> <br />Zone AO is the flood insurance I"ate zone that cOI"responds to the <br />aI"eas of lOa-year shallow flooding (usually sheetflow on sloping <br />terrain) where average depths are between land 3 feet. Average <br />whole-foot depths deI"ived from the detailed hydraulic analyses aI"e <br />shown within this zone. <br /> <br />Zone X <br /> <br />Zone X is the flood insurance rate zone that corresponds LO areas <br />outside the SOO-year floodplain, areas within the 500-year <br />floodplain, areas of lOa-year flooding where average depths are <br />less than 1 foot, areas of lOa-year flooding where the concributing <br />drainage area is less than 1 square mile, and areas protected from <br />the lOa-year flood by levees. No base flood elevations or depths <br />aI"e shown within this zone. <br /> <br />6.0 FLOOD INSURANCE RATE MAP <br /> <br />The Flood Insurance Rate Map is designed for flood insurance and <br />floodplain management applications. <br /> <br />For flood insuI"ance applications, the map designates flood insurance <br />rate zones as described in Section 5.0 and, in the lOa-year floodplains <br />that were studied by detailed methods, shows selected whole-foot base <br />flood elevations or average depths. Insurance agents use the zones and <br />base flood elevations in conjunction with information on structures and <br />their contents to assign premium rates for flood insurance policies. <br /> <br />For floodplain management applications, the map shows by tints, <br />screens, and symbols, the 100- and SOO-year floodplains, floodways, and <br />the locations of selected croSS sections used in the hydraulic analyses <br />and floodway computations. <br /> <br />The current Flood Insurance Rate Map presents flooding information for <br />the entire geographic area of San Miguel County. Previously, separate <br />Flood Hazard Boundary Maps and/or Flood Insurance Rate Maps were <br />prepared for each identified flood-pI"one incorporated community and the <br />unincorporated areas of the county. HistoI"ical data I"elating to the <br />maps prepared for each community are presented in Community Map History <br />(Table 4). <br /> <br />7.0 OTHER STUDIES <br /> <br />Similar studies relating to flooding from the San Miguel River and <br />Cornet Creek within the Town of Telluride have been prepared by <br />Woodward-Clevenger and Associates, Inc. (Reference 20), Wing <br />Engineering, Inc. (Reference 21), and the Institute of Arctic and <br />Alpine Research, (Reference 22, 23, and 24). The laO-year flood depths <br />in the San Miguel River were estimated to be approximately 6.0 feet at <br />several locations by Woodward-Clevenger and Associates, Inc., in their <br /> <br />23 <br />
