<br />The hydraulic reanalyses for this reach of the South Platte River <br />was completed in September 1987. <br /> <br />1.3 Coordination <br /> <br />Community base map selection, topographic mapping, and the <br />identification of streams requiring- detailed study were accomplished <br />in a meeting attended by personnel of Gingery Associates, Inc., <br />FEMA, the UDFCD, and officials of Commerce City on February 12, <br />1976. <br /> <br />The final community coordination meeting was held on March 1, 1977, <br />at which time the final results of the Flood Insurance Study were <br />presented to city officials and residents. An explanation of the <br />NFIP was made by a representative, of FEMA and the results of the <br />Flood Insurance Study were presented by Gingery Associates, Inc. <br />There were no problems with or objections to the study, <br /> <br />2.0 AREA STUDIED <br /> <br />2.1 Scope of Study <br /> <br />This Flood Insurance Study covers the incorporated area of the City <br />of Commerce City, Adams County, Colorado. The area of study is <br />shown on the Vicinity Map (Figure 1). <br /> <br />Floods caused by overflow of the S9uth Plat te River and Sand Creek <br />were studied in detail. The areas studied in detail were chosen <br />with consideration given to forecast~d development. <br /> <br />2.2 Community Description <br /> <br />Commerce City is situated in the southwestern corner of Adams <br />County, a centrally located county in Colorado. The city is 15 <br />miles south of Brighton, the co,!nty seat, Denver's Stapleton <br />International Airport and the U.S; Army's Rocky Mountain Arsenal <br />border the city on the east. The C;ty and the County of Denver, the <br />state capital, forms the southern bqundary, and Adams County adjoins <br />the city to the north and west, . <br /> <br />Commerce City was first incorporate:d in December of 1952 and named <br />Commerce Town. The population increased 750 percent from 1,200 <br />persons in 1952 to 9,000 persons in 1960 at which time Commerce Town <br />became Commerce City. As of 1980, the City had a population of <br />approximately 16,230 persons. In 1988, the population was estimated <br />to be approximately 18,200 persons. <br /> <br />2 <br />
