.
I
,

To locate the edge of the flood plain by simple scaling
methods, measure the distance on the map from two or more physical
features, that can be identified both on the map and in the
field, to the edge of the flood plain. The flood plain limits
can then be established by laying out the measured distances
in the field.

,
,
I

After the county Flood Insurance Study is completed and
Larimer County adopts flood plain management regulations, a
FLood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) will be issued and Larimer
County will enter the Regular Flood Insurance Program.
The FIRM delineates areas in which flood insurance will be
sold at actuarial rates - those based on determination of
actual risk. (Actuarial rates do not apply to those
structures existing before the effective date of the
insurance rate map). New construction is permitted in the
flood plain but is covered only by actuarial rates, which
would be lower than subsidized rates if the new construction
conforms to FIA Flood Plain Management Specifications or
considerably higher if constructed at hazard elevations.

FLOOD INSURANCE

The National Flood Insurance Program established by Congress
in 1968 and amended by the Federal Disaster Protection Act of
1973 is partially designed to protect citizens from financial
loss if they own property in a flood hazard area. This Act
provides affordable insurance through federal subsidies to
citizens in communities that adopt and enforce regulations
controlling future development in flood hazard areas.

Flood insurance policies are sold by locally licensed
insurance agents. Far additional information on rates and
coverage, contact your local insurance agent. or the Flood
Insurers Association Servicing Company for Colorado at
(303) 861-0561.

In June 1974, Larimer County applied for participation
in the National Flood Insurance Program and was accepted July
2, 1974 under the Emergency Phase. Community eligibility
enables citizenSj regardless of location, to purchase flood
insurance at subsidized rates. Property owners can purchase
up to $35,000 worth of insurance at an annual rate of 25 cents
per 5100.00 coverage and 35 cents for content far residential
structures. Coverage for commercial structures is also available.

I
I
I
I
,
I

At this time, the FIA is continuing with the Flood Insurance
Studie. on other streams in the county. This additional county
flooa ha~ara information will be available in the near future.

-18-

-19-
