<br />Other flood protection measures include the Government
<br />Highline Canal and a recent channelization project (1979)
<br />on Indian Wash from North Avenue to Texas Avenue along 28
<br />Road.

<br />The Highline Canal as discussed in the SCS Indian Wash
<br />Watershed Work Plan (Reference 1) has a high spoil bank
<br />and roadway along the south side which provides a
<br />capacity in addition to normal irrigation flow, to
<br />intercept runoff from approximately 3.4 square miles of
<br />upstream unreservoired drainage area. This additional
<br />intercepted flow is carried west by the Highline Canal
<br />and spilled into Indian Wash. Thus the Highline canal
<br />provides protection for the irrigated lands immediately
<br />below the canal. Of the total watershed area above the
<br />Highline Canal approximately 9.6 square miles or 90% is
<br />affected by the IWl structure and the Highline Canal.

<br />The Indian Wash channel has recently been channelized by
<br />the City from just below North Avenue to Texas Avenue.
<br />This project which also included the replacement of
<br />several stream crossings has increased the capacity of
<br />the Indian Wash channel. The design discharge for the
<br />project was 1000 cfs. Figure 5 is a phot'o'graph of a
<br />typical section of the project.
