The <br />1 88 Iev~sion 0 th a.FHWA regulat on requ~res that <br />bridge owners maintain a bridge inspection program that <br />includes procedures for underwater inspection. This <br />Technical Advisory and the interim procedures in the <br />Attachment provide guidance on the development and <br />implementation of procedures for evaluating bridge scour <br />to meet the requirements of the regulation. <br /> <br />d. Memorandum of Mr. Ronald E. Heinz. Director. Office of <br />Engineering. to Regional Federal Highway Administrators <br />and Direct Federal Program Administrator Dated April 17. <br />1987. This memorandum stated in part: "Each State <br />ShOUld evaluate the risk of its bridges being subjected <br />to scour damage during floods on the order of a 100 to <br />500 year return periQd or more." <br /> <br />e. FY 1989 High Priority Research Program of the FBWA. The <br />FBWA recognizes the Subject of scour at bridges as a long <br />range high priority national problem area for research, <br />and recommends that appropriate studies be carried out to <br />improve the state-of-practice of designing new bridges <br />and inspecting existing bridges for scour. <br /> <br />_g' .OtJ:/kr- <br /> <br />Thomas O.
