Figure. 1 - Historical Jamestown

future flood event. For, in Jamestown the
overriding question should not be: Will a flood
occur? Rather, it should be: When will it occur
and how will the community respond?

Community Description

Jamestown is a small mountain community
located in the central northwest section of
Boulder County, approximately 10 miles
northwest of the city of Boulder. The commu-
nity is situated in the middle reaches of the
Front Range of Colorado, where the eastern-
most range of the Rocky Mountains comes to
greet the high Colorado plains. It is here,
nestled among green, forested ridges and lush
canyons winding their way gradually down
from the Continental Divide, that Jamestown
sits. The town itself is located in an ideal
montane setting, surrounded by beautiful,
forested slopes rising abruptly out of a peace-
ful mountain valley. The flat expanses of this

small valley, where most the town is located,
also forms the confluence for the James creek
and the Little James creek - two streams with
an extensive history of flooding.

Due to the ideal setting and the slow pace of
activity, the town has a charm that makes it
an extremely desirable place to live for people
seeking to escape from the hectic pace of the
rapidly urbanizing Boulder-Denver corridor.
The town population is currently listed as
consisting of 256 permanent residents with
approximately 12 additional people moving
into town during the summer months. Within
town limits, there is a Town Hall, a commu-
nity church, an elementary school, a Fire
House, a Post Office, and a small general
store/cafe.

Today, Jamestown is primarily a residential
community with many of its members com-
muting to either Boulder, Denver, or Long-

2
