of obtaining slope-area measurements throughout the area. This eff'ort
in~ludes the making of .indire~t determinations of' peak dis~harge at all
of its re~lar gaging stations and also at numerous other 10~ations
throughout the affected area.. The Corps of Engineers established about
125 high water m!lrks along :many of the flood-affe~ted streams in order to
establish high water profiles.

b. There has not been suffi~ient time to analyze the volume of'
data that was~olle~ted in the post-flood effort ~ The U. S. Geologi~al
Survey has a spe~ia1 unit in its Helena, Montana, office that is
presently engaged in the analysis of' the data ~ollected in the field.
The results of these stuliies. are not available ex~ept for some preliminary
information on tributary streams. Availab;J.e data are summarized in
tables 2 and 3. The limited ~amparisons in these tables illustrate the
relative magnitude of' the 1964 event.

TABLE 2
REPRESEN'rATIVE PROVISIONAL COMPARISONS OF JUNE 1964 FlOOD

Drainage Previous Re~ord June 1964
Area Period of Stage Dis~harge StageDis~harge
Stream Sg .M:!.. It is believed that other tributarY streams in the area affe~ted
by the storm, parti~ularly those lying west of tJ?.e Missouri River, will
~ompare with past o~curren~es in a manner similar to those given in table 2.
In addition to the above values, preliminary estimates are available of
inf'low"'outflow hydrographs for Ca\'lyon Ferry, Gibson, -ana: fiber Reservoirs.
These hydrographs, furnished by the Bu.reau of Re~lamation, are presented
on plates 2, 3, and 4, respe~tively.

d. The record tributary discharges resulted in extremely high flows
on the main stem of the Missouri River in the reach fram Canyon Ferry to
the upper end of the Fort Pe~k Reservoir. The preliminary peak values
estimated for the 1964 event at several of the main stem stations are
shown in table 3 and ~ampared to peaks for the 1908 and 1953 floods.
It should be noted that the 1964 peak values at Virgelle and Zortman were
lowered appre~iably by the operation of Tiber Reservoir.

8
