They are a means of
controlling building size and location, requiring proper drainage ~aci1ities
and land use, and assisting a prospective buyer in making a choice in sn
unfamiliar a~a.

FLOOD PLAIN EVACUATIon

Reduction of flood hazerdo can be achieved by removal of damageable
property from the area. This is often a costly and impractical process,
particularly if the area contains a great deal of development.. Thia method
lMY be applied to undeveloped areal! and to the removal of old, uneconomic..l
structures.

PLOODPROOFING

Floodprooting is patticularly adaptable to existing structurea. Measures
that may be undertaken include reinforcing the structure to Withstand the
force of flood waters, permanent closures of 10\< level openings, installation
of valves or gates on eewer and drainage linea, moving stocks snd supplies
to higher floors, watertight protection for machinery, appliances, and
utilities that cannot be moved, having aand filled burlap bags avai1sble
for building te~rary flood reta~ing walls, and training personnel in
evacuation and flood fighting proced~re8. MallY of these measures caD be
uscd in Il/lIo' structures to permit their construction in the flood plain.

FLOOD CONTROL \lORKS

Flood protection worka could consiat of levees, channel improvements,
or flood storage facilitiea, or a combination of these.
