This vegetation <br />is 1 <Irgely sustained by the natural watert(loleandbyflooding. <br /> <br />FLOODPtA1N AND PR08LEM AREAS <br /> <br />GENERAL <br />The City of Golden and Jefferson County adopted floodplain ordinances to pro- <br />mote the public welfare, preserve the natural conveyance andst oragecapacity <br />of the floodplain and reduce the liability of the City and County (Appendix <br />B). The Flood HaHrd Area Delineation St~y for Clear Creek (Reference 1) <br />documents and de11neates the water surface profile and boundaries of the 100- <br />year, or "regulatory" floodplain and forms the basis for the developnent of <br />this master plan for upper Clear Creek. Figure VI-l shows the limits of the <br />lOO-year floodplain which were adopted by the Colorado iIIater Conservation <br />Board on January 30, 1980. lhe depicted flood'..-ater surface area is a pictor- <br />ial representation of the lOQ-year flood profile in plan format whiCh is used <br />for regulation and land use planning purposes. <br /> <br />Flood History <br />lhefol1owing information relating to historical flood events has been ex- <br />cerpted from the Flood HaZard Area Delineation Study for Clear Creek (Refe- <br />rencel). <br /> <br />Historically, flooding in the Clear Creek bilsln MS been relatively infre- <br />quent. Since lil64, twelve floods have been reported on Clear Creek and its <br />tributaries. ~ lives have been reported lost due to flood related causes in <br />the Clear Creek basin. lhe following description of the floods of August <br />188B, June 1956, and July 1965 are typical of the information currently <br />avallable (Reference 25). <br /> <br />Flood of August 1888: This flood resulted from cloudbursts on the <br />eastern slope of the front range of the Rocky "buntains. Adischargeof <br />8,700 cubic feet per second was reported at the mouth of Clear Creek <br />Canyon. lhisisthe largest measured discharge in th€ history of this <br />g aging stat i01\ which is located 1.5 mi 1 ~s upstream from Golden. <br />
