accurately record the peak: stage or discharge, An abandoned stream gage on the North Fork, just
upstream of its confluence with the South Platte River, was discontinued approximately 15 years
ago, Therefore, no direct measurement was recorded on the North Fork, The highest recorded peak:
discharge on the discontinued gage was about 2.1 ()() cfs in 1949.

3. Hydraulic Summary
The channel geometries of Sand Draw, Spring Gulch, lower Buffalo Creek, and other tributaries
were significantly altered during the July 12 flood event. Streambanks were severely eroded,
streambeds either aggraded or were scoured, vegetation was removed, crossings were destroyed,
and low flow channels were laterally displaced, The post-flood hydraulic characteristics of the
affected stream reaches are significantly different than those prior to July 12, 1996.

Jefferson County performed hydraulic analyses, particularly on Sand Draw, to estimate the "safe"
channel conveyance in the lower reach through the community, The hydraulic analyses were based
on surveyed slopes and cross-sections of the post-flood channel conditions. A discharge of 2,000
cfs was determined to be the maximum discharge that would likely not cause major damage to
Highway 126 and adjacent homes and outbuildings, The County also used the hydraulic analyses to
design several roadway crossings that serve residential areas to the south and west of Highway 126
along Sand Draw,

7
