STUDY AREA DESCRIPTION
A. Basin Descriptions
The study area consists of the drainage basins of Hayesmount Gulch and
Tributary, and a portion of the Box Elder Drainage Basin (see Figure 1). The
study area is within the proposed New Denver Airport (Airport) boundary which
is bounded by 112th Avenue to the north, Watkins Road to the east, 56th Avenue
to the south, and Powhaton Road to the west. Ironda1e Road traverses through
the central portion of the study area in an east-westerly direction. Existing
development within the study area is mainly agricultural with dry1and farming
and pasture. Future development includes airport-related facilities within
the Airport boundary and annexed land use adjacent to the outside of the Air-
port boundary. A description of each drainage basin follows.

Hayesmount Gulch and Tributary
Hayesmount Gulch drains approximately nine square miles of area at the
north Airport boundary and eventually enters the Hudson Canal which is located
approximately seven miles north of the New Airport boundary. The basin is
about seven miles long and 1.7 miles wide (at it's widest). The drainage
basin ranges in elevation from 5,640 feet at the top of the basin to 5,250
feet at the Airport boundary. The average stream slope is 55 feet per mile.
Existing development within the basin consists of agricultural lands.
Hayesmount Gulch Tributary drains approximately three square miles of
area to the Hayesmount Gulch. The basin is about two miles long and 1.5 miles
wide (at it's widest). The drainage basin ranges in elevation from 5,420 feet
at the top of the basin to 5,280 feet at the Airport boundary. The average
slope is 70 feet per mile. Existing land use is mainly agricultural. Future
deve 1 opment for both Hayesmount Bas i n and the Tri buta ry i nc 1 udes a i rport-
related facilities such as the terminal building, airline office and cargo,
roadway, and tax i-way. A sma 11 port i on of the Hayesmount Bas i n outs i de the
south Airport boundary is zoned as business and commercial use according to
the City of Aurora's land use map.

Box El der Creek
Box Elder Creek originates from E1 Paso County.
is approximately 220 square miles at the south side

The total drainage basin
of the Airport boundary.
