INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />During the summer of 1996 the Colorado Climate Center (CCC) and Henz <br />Meteorological Services (HMS), in support ofthe CCC Extreme Precipitation Study, <br />entered into discussions concerning historic storms which have produced heavy <br />precipitation particularly over higher elevation locations in the State of Colorado. Six <br />Storm Regions, as defined by the CCC and discussed at an October 1996 Workshop in <br />Denver, are as follow (see Figure 1): <br /> <br />I. Great Plains, <br />2. Front Range and Eastern Foothills, <br />3. Southwest Mountains, <br />4. Northern Mountains, <br />5. Colorado Plateau (southwest Colorado), and <br />6. Northern Basin (northwest Colorado). <br /> <br />At the October Workshop participants agreed on li~;ts of important stonns for <br />consideration for each of these Regions. CCC entered into a Service Agreement with <br />HMS in early September 1996 which requested HMS to review and interpret the clata <br />availability for certain stOlm events which affected Colorado and southern Wyoming: A <br />copy of this Service Agreement is included in an Appendi x attached to this report. These <br />events, a subset of the lists produced at the Workshop, are as follow: <br /> <br />. Event 1: Penrose, Colorado; June 2-6,1921, <br />. Event 2: Cimmaron, Colorado; June 3, 1952., <br />. Event 3: Plnm Creek and Kiowa Creek, Colorado; June 16-17, 1965, <br />. Event 4: Big Thompson Canyon, Colorado; July 31,1976, <br />. Event 5: Poudre River and Rist Canyon, Colorado; August 1, 1976, <br />. Event 6: Frijole Creek, Colorado; July.3, 1981, <br />. Event 7: Cheyenne, Wyoming; August ]1, 1985, <br />. Event 8: Opal, Wyoming; August 16,1990, <br />. Event 9: Muddy Creek, Colorado; June 20, 1994, <br />. Event 10: Robideau Creek, Colorado; August 10, 1993, and <br />. Event 11: Pagosa Springs, Colorado; August 22,1'995. <br /> <br />In addition to reviewing and interpreting available data, HMS was also asked to identify <br />storms meriting rainfall reconstruction and to consider the: implications ofthe~se eleven <br />events for future site-specific PMP determinations. <br />
