-

This soil survey is a Juolication of the National Cooperative SOil Survey, a
joint effort of the United States Department of Agriculture and other federal
agencies, state agencies including the Agricultural Experiment Stations, and
local agel1cies. The Soil Conservation Service has leadership for the federal
part of the National Cooperative Soil Survey. In line with Department of
Agriculture policies, benefits of this program are available to all, regardless of
race, color, national ori;Jin, sex, religion, marital status, or age.
Major fieldwork for t~ is soil survey was performed in the period t 969-79. Soil
names and descriptions were approved in 1980. Unless otherwise indicated,
statements in this publi:ation refer to conditions in the survey area in 197~1.
This survey was made Go'operatively by the Soil Conservation Service and the
Colorado Agricultural E:<p'3riment Station. It is part of the technical assistance
furnished to the Upper HLerfano Soil Conservation District.
Soil maps In this survey may be copied without permission. Enlargement of
these maps. however, could cause misunderstanding of the detail of mapping.
If enlarged, maps do not show the small areas of contrasting soils that could
have been shown at a lariJer scale.
Cover: Wheat-fallow strips on Noden sandy loam, t to 8 percent slopes.
Strips are perpendicular to the prevailing winds to reduce soil blowing and to
conserve moisture..

ii
