At magnitude 8.4-8.6 on
the Richter Scale, the quake
(known as the Prince William
Sound quake) was the largest
to hit North America in
historic times, lasting for about

4 minutes. Though only 114
died in the sparsely populated
state, damage was widespread,
leaving many homeless and
paralyzing the state's economy.
Earthquake-gmerated tsunamis
carried the destruction
thousands of miles further
afield, affecting much of the
Pacific Basin.
