The agricultural development is
similar to that of the Upper Main Stem Subregion centering around
11 vestock production and production of feeds on irrigated lands to
complement the large areas of rangeland. On lands with favorable
air drainage, major land areas are devoted to the production, for
market, of fruit, vegetables, and dry beans. Oil, natural gas, and
coal are the most important minerals produced. There is also
significant production_ of vanadium and uranium. Gold, silver and
associated minerals are produced, but tlulir importance has declined
considerably from the boom production of the early 8ettlement days.

Recreation and associated industries contribute substantially
to the local and regional econoDlY. The San Juan Mountains, known
for their scenic beauty and recreational opportunities, attract
vacationers from throughout the country.

.:-

3
