DESCRIPTIONS OF THE SOILS

In this section the soils of Otero County are de-
scribed in detail. The procedure is to describe
first the soil series and then the mapping units
in that series. Thus, to get full information on
anyone mapping unit, it is necessary to read both
the description of that unit and the description of
the soil series to which the unit belongs.
Each soil series description contains a short
narrative description of a profile considered repre-
sentative of the series, and a much more detailed
description of the same profile that scientists,
engineers, and others can use in making highly tech-
nical interpretations. The colors described are for
dry soil, lIDless otherwise noted.
Some of the teI1llS used in the soil descriptions
are defined in the Glossary, and some are defined in

1

the section uHow This Survey Was Made." The approx-
imate acreage and proportionate extent of each soil
mapped are shown in table 1. At the back of this
soil survey is the HGuide to Mapping Units," which
lists the mapping units in the county and shows the
capability unit (irrigated, nonirrigated, or both)
and range site each mapping unit is in, and the page
where each of these groups is described.

The detailed soil map for this soil survey was
made at two scales. A scale of 4 inches to the mile
is used for the area along the Arkansas River and a
scale of 2 inches to the mile for the rest. MOst of
the area mapped at 4 inches to the mile consists of
nearly level and gently sloping soils that are irri-
gated.

TABLE 1. --APPROXIMATE ACREAGE AND PROPORTIONATE EXTENT OF THE SOILS

Soil

4
.,

Apishapa loamy sand-------------
Apishapa cIay-------------------
Baca loam, 1 to 5 percent
slopes------------------------
Bankard sand--------------------
Bloom loam----------------------
Cadoma clay, 2 to 12 percent
slopes------------------------
Cascajo soils and Gravelly land-
Dwyer loamy sand----------------
Glenberg loamy fine sand, 0 to
1 percent slopes~-------------
Glenberg-Bankard sandy loams,
o to 1 percent slopes---------
Harvey loam, wet, 0 to 3 percent
slopes------------------------
Harvey-Stoneham loarns, 0 to 3
percent slopes----------------
Haverson loam, 0 to 3 percent
slopes------------------------
Kim and Wiley loarns, 1 to 9
percent slopes----------------
Komman and Neesopah loarns, 0
to 1 percent slopes-----------
Komman and Neesopah loarns, 1 to
3 percent slopes--------------
Komman and Neesopah loams, 3 to
5 percent slopes-----------~--
Las Animas soils--~-------------
limon silty clay loam, 0 to 3
percent slopes----------------
Limon silty clay, 0 to 3 percent
slopes-------------------~----
Manvel silt loam, 0 to 3 percent
slopes------------------------

1

See footnote at end of table.

Area

Acres

641
4,327

Z,393
4,584
1,881

22,396
10,685
12,010

2,S86

1,378

1,122

67,320

9,061

2S,430

4,252

7,170

1,218
2,917

3,579

12,554

43,231

Extent

Percent

0,1
.5

.3
.6
.2

2.8
1.3
1.5

8,3

1.1

3,1

1.5

5.3

Soil

.3

Manzanola loam, 0 to 1 percent
slopes-----------------------
Manzanola clay loam, I to 3
percent slopes---------------
Manzanola soils. eroded--------
Minnequa loam, 1 to 3 percent
slopes-----------------------
Minnequa silty clay loam, 0 to
1 percent slopes-------------
Minnequa silty clay loam, 1 to
5 percent slopes-------------
Nepesta clay loam, 0 to 3 per-
cent slopes------------------
Ntnna clay loam, 0 to 1 percent
slopes-----------------------
Numa clay loam, 1 to 3 percent
slopes-----------------------
Numa clay loam, 3 to 5 percent
slopes-----------------------
Numa loam, gravel subsoil vari-
ant, 5 to 9 percent slopes---
Olney sandy loam, 0 to 3 per-
cent slopes------------------
Olney sandy clay loam, 0 to 1
percent slopes~--------------
Otero sandy loam, I to 5 per-
cent slopes------------------
Penrose channery loam, 1 to 25
percent slopes---------------
Rocky Ford silty clay loam, 0
to 1 percent slopes----------
Rocky Ford silty clay loam, 1
to 3 percent slopes----------
Rocky Ford silty clay loam,
wet, 0 to 1 percent slopes---

.2

.1

.5

,9

,2
,4

.4

Area

Acres

41,800

7,779
427

154,678

609

3,857

4,039

2,S32

8,9I1

2,639

342

26,542

769

IS ,301

80,56S

19,393

35,004

S,546

Extent

Percent

5.1

1.0
.1

19,1

.1

.
