This panel will discuss how economic forces either produce or <br />decrease risk due to extreme environmental events. Questions include the extent to which <br />risky conditions and disaster losses are attributable to "normal" economic and political <br />processes and the challenges to the public and private sectors in promoting investments in <br />mitigation versus programs directed by self interest and short-term economic gain. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Lunch (purple stamp) <br /> <br />Concurrent Sessions: .The afternoon sessions will focus on current hazards issues. <br />Discussants are asked to provide brief overviews of the subject at hand, based on their <br />research or hazards management experience, Time is reserved for group discussion. <br />Recorders will prepare one-page summaries that will be sent to participants following the <br />meeting, <br /> <br />1. EVALUATING THE NATIONAL PRE-DISASTER MITIGATION PLAN <br />Moderator: Brent Woodworth, IBM Crisis Response Team <br />Discussants: <br />Michael Gaus, State University of New York, Buffalo <br />Margaret Lawless, FEMA Mitigation Directorate <br />Ann Patton, City of Tulsa, Oklahoma <br />Dennis Mileti, Natural Hazards Center <br />Recorder: Claret Heider, Building Seismic Safety Council <br /> <br />This session will present the results of a peer review of the "National Pre-Disaster Mitigation <br />Plan" developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. A report is available to <br />workshop attendees who are asked to provide additional comments concerning the issues <br />identified. Participants are also asked to suggest ideas for conveying the plan to the public <br />and obtaining support, <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />2.
