Recession was measured
at 30-m intervals, These data, combined with data for five other periods, show temporal and spatial
variations in erosion in Lake County spanning time intervals of 17 to 114 years in length. Mean rates
range from 0.46 to 0.50 rnIyr, maximum rates range from 1,68 to 3.73 rnIyr, and standard deviation
in rates ranges from 0.37 to 0,73 rnIyr. Maximum rates and highest standard deviation in rates occur
in the 1937-1973 and 1973-1990 periods. The ratio of maximum rate to minimum rate ranges from
1.68 to 3.72 in the 1876-1937 and 1973-1990 periods, respectively. Alongshore maxima in recession
occur at 1,61- to :3 .22-km intervals.

e

Data from this study are compared to data from a 1,3-km reach at Painesville on-the-Lake,
Lake County, At Painesville on-the-Lake, data were collected for six sequential periods, 3 to 61
years in length, using aerial photography, and for 4 sequential periods, 1 to 3 years in length, using
topographic surveys of the bluff line and bluff toe. These data illustrate short term temporal and
spatial variations in recession that are masked by rates determined over longer time intervals,

e

,...-,
