Lab projects are set within the context of the University of South
Carolina's nationally-recognized Geography Department. There are seven faculty associates and
seven graduate students currently affiliated with the HRL. Twelve theses and dissertations have
been completed by lab affiliates. In addition to research and training, the HRL has an active
outreach program that provides technical expertise to state and local governmental agencies. The
Hazards Research Lab also houses the editorial offices of the journal Environmental Hazards
(published by Elsevier) an international research journal addressing the human and policy
dimensions of hazards. Susan Cutter (Director of the Hazards Research Lab) and James K.
Mitchell (Rutgers University) are co-editors,

Some of the current projects include:

e

I. An investigation of the social and spatial inequities in the distribution of hazard events and
losses by county for the entire US;

2. An assessment of Hurricane Floyd evacuation behavior of South Carolina residents based on
a sample of coastal residents; longitudinal analysis of the evacuation decisions of Horry
County residents, and a survey of the emergency planning priorities of local elected officials;

3. A web-based atlas of toxic risks for South Carolina;

6. Completion of the 2nd Assessment project on the geographic and temporal patterns of hazard
events and losses for the Joseph Henry Press entitled American Hazardscapes: The
Regionalization of Hazards and Disasters.

For further information, contact the Hazards Research Lab by snail mail (above), phone
(803-777-1699), fax (803-777-4972), e-mail (uschrl@ecotopia.geog.sc.edu), or on the Web: _
http://www.c1a.sc.edulgeoglhrllhome.html..

k:~
