C. area. The Workshop
Coordinators are Dr. S. Nishenko (Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA)),
Dr. D. Cleaves (USDA/Forest Service) and Ms. C. Ne]son (OFCM).

The purpose of this Workshop is to assess the state of the risk assessment and cost-benefit
analysis research, to identifY national standards for measurement, data or values used in the risk
assessments, to identifY any deficiencies, and to propose subsequent actions to overcome these
deficiencies.

The Workshop will seek to identifY improved system level risk assessments that can be
used to provide (1) reliable and valid estimates of the expected losses from natural hazard events
(structures, buildings, building contents, life loss and injury), (2) an assessment of the
consequences of those losses (social, economic, political, environmental, and ]egal), and (3) a
means for assessing the costs, benefits, effectiveness, and priorities of alternative risk mitigation
policies and strategies. Achieving these objectives will require close collaboration among Federal
agencies, state and local governments, the private sector, and the general public. The following
Federal agencies have already expressed interest in participating: FEMA, USDA, Forest Service,
USGS, NOAA (National Climate Data Center, National Weather Service, US Global Change
Research ProgramlNational Assessment Coordination Office, NIST, and Office of Oceanic and
Atmospheric Research), DOClBureau of Economic Analysis, Center for Disease Control, and
National Science Foundation. Universities, professional associations, research institutes, and
public officials are encouraged to participate.

If you are interested in participating, please send contact information to the OFCM Point
of Contact: Ms. Cyntl).ia Ann Nelson, Senior StaffMeteorologistl Coordinator for
Meteorological Programs, Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorological Services and
Supporting Research, Suite 1500, 8455 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD 20910; Ph: (301)
427-2002 x26, email Cynthia.Nelson@noaa.gov
