r- ,,~'"i

Mr. Jim Root
February 5, 1998
Page two

railroad and the new Ralston Road extension bridge) were installed. Two new drop
structures were built (one at the railroad bridge and one just upstream of Lamar Street, in
combination with an irrigation diversion structure). At Lamar Street the channel invert
was lowered to increase the capacity of the existing bridge.

Comments
The channelization project associated with the extension of Ralston Road has the capacity
to contain the IOO-year flow in the new channel except in two locations. Just upstream of
the new railroad bridge, the floodplain is slightly wider than the channel. In the vicinity
of 56'h Avenue the floodplain is much narrower than shown on the 1992 FIS, but it still
extends well beyond the intersection of Ralston Road and Sheridan Boulevard, to the
north. It also extends to the Clear Creek floodplain to the south. We are aware of the
City of Arvada's plans for future floodplain improvements in this area, particularly its
plans for a major park at the confluence of Ralston Creek and Clear Creek. When the
future improvements have been completed, the Ralston Creek floodplain will be even
narrower than it already is.

We are confident that the project constructed by the City of Arvada will function as
designed. We have no objections to the proposed changes to the floodplain of Ralston
Creek. We also wish the city well with the remainder of this ambitious project.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this letter.

Brian R.
