comparison of an upstream site in. Weld County. The studies and discus..
sions culminated in a meeting of the Colorado Water Conservation Board
in Fort Morgan on September 11-12. 1964. at which time the board of-
ficially approved the recommended Narrows site depicted on Map 2.

The Narrows Dam and Reservoir would be a multiple-purpose facll..
i ty serving the functions of irri9ation. flood control. recrealtion.
fish-wildlife propagation. and po-ssibly municipal water supply. Opera-
tion of the Narrows Reservoir woulld be integrated and coordinalted with
the operation of all upstream res, ervoirs. and. as the terminal reservoir
on the South Platte River in Cola, rado. the Narrows Reservoir would be
able to capture and store flows t.hat othE.rwise would largely be wasted.
The bureau reports that it is well along with this project. and it ex-
pects to submit a report thereon to Congress early in calendar year
1966.

~rkansas River Basin

Two projects are scheduled for construction in the Arkansas
River Basin which would. among other things. provide added flood con-
t.rol protection for that area. In addition. as part of the continuing
consideration of the over-all wat.er problems of the area. the Corps of
Engineers is reviewing the advisability and feasibility of a system of
flood control dams along the nume, rous tri.butaries feeding int.o the
A.rkansas River.

Pueblo Dam. As part of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project, the
Bureau of Reclamation will construct the Pueblo Dam and Reservoir ap-
, proximately six miles west of the' city. This dam will be 180 feet
high and 10.600 feet long and will impound approximately 400.000 acrf:
feet of water -- 290.000 for cons.ervation. 100.000 for flood control,
and 10.000 for dead storage. Flood damage between the Pueblo damsite
and John Martin Reservoir is presently estimated at $708.000 annually.
although the 1965 flood greatly exceeded this figure. The bureau
e.stimates that the Pueblo Dam and Reservoir will 13liminate about 66
per cent of this damage. Construction of the dam and reservoi.r is
scheduled to begin in September of 1968 and the project will take three
years to complete.

Trinidad Dam. On July 3, 1958. the Trinidad Project was author'"
ized for construction by the Corps of Engineers. This project is
Ideated along the Purgatoire Rive,r in Las Animas County not far from
t.he ColoriWo-New Mexico bordE.r....wi th the damsi te being about two miles
southwest of the City of Trinidad. The Trinidad Heservoir. when
completed. will have a total capacity of 114.500 acre feet of which
51.000 is allocated to flood control. 20,000 for irrigation, 4,500 for
a permanent fishery pool. ancl 39.000 for sndiment retention. Funds
have been appropriated for the be'ginni'19 c"'nc.t.n'ction work wh:~ch will
start as soon as negotiations on the irrigation repRvment contract are
completed. At present. it is anticipated thatch.,.. ,;,..n3I:.;:uction work
will begin in fiscal year 1966.

~oil Conservation Service
With respect to Soil Conservation Service projects, 60 applica-

- 17 -
