A method of estimating the size of bed material was developed

because of the difficulties in measuring large particles in fast-flowing

water. The particles' upstream height and width above the streambed

were measured and found to correlate well with dSO measured using the

Wolman (19S4) method. At 17 of 18 sites sampled, the estimated particle

sizes of the bed material differed 0.2 ft (6.1 mm) or less from dSO'

Data on the axis orientation of individual particles indicate that the

long, or a-axis was vertical in 1 percent of the particles; the inter-
mediate, or b-axis was vertical in 13 percent of the particles, and the
short, or c-axis was vertical in 86 percent of the particles.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This study was authorized by a cooperative agreement between the

U.S. Geological Survey and the State of Colorado, Department of Natural

I

Resources, Colorado Water Conservation Board. 1 would like to thank my

colleagues at the Colorado District (unfortunately too numerous to

mention) for their help with the field work and preparation of the data.

~
