The results of the theoretical and laboratory studies relating

roughness to relative snoothness (a depth parameter divided by a part-

icle size) are not entirely consistent. Verification using field data
has not always been conclusive (Limerinos, 1970). This is probably due
to a combination of several factors: (1) The theoretical and laboratory-
derived relations are based on uniform flow (a condition rare or absent
in natural channeis), particle size, and on distribution of particle
size, (2) few natural-flow streams exist in which some other factors do
not affect channel roughness, and (3) there is an unknown model-to.
prototype error.associated with the theoretical and laboratory-derived
relations. In addition, although theoretical studies provide a sound
derivation of the processes involved in flow resistance, the studies
have been tested only generally with flume data or are too complex for
practical appl ication.

I

r
