T", da..aging floods that occur along the study <br />reach normslly originate Over the entire watershed. T". long, <br />narrow watersheds of the main stems and tributaries \IlUh thsir <br /> <br />extensive co~mercial_ind~strial develop~ent ~hich includes a con- <br />centration of railroad facilities, three bridges, and the network <br />of streets and other improvements usually found in an urbanized <br />ragion. <br /> <br />fairly steep 510pe~ ere conducive to faet rises and high peck flows <br />of short duration. The average slope in the ~atershed is appro~i- <br />mately 60 feet per mile and, ~ithin the study reach, 37 feet per <br />mile. Streambed elevations vary from approximately 4,670 feet at <br />the mouth to 4,877 feet at the upper limit of the study reaoh. <br />Flood plain widths would vary fro~ less than 100 feet in the upper <br />reach during an Intermediate Regional flood to approximately 2,300 <br />feet at a point Just upetream of the 11th Street ~ridge during a <br />Standard Project flood. The Intermediate Regional Flood <br />would not overtop the top of the rails, out they would oe inun_ <br />dated 5.8 feet by the Standard Project Flood. The c~nbined hecld <br />losses of the two bridge~ would b~ 5.2 faet duting tho Standard <br />Project flood and 1.2 feet during the Intermediate Regional flood. <br />The 18th Street bridge ie ~ 150-foot 5-span otructure <br />that is skewBd 30 degrees. Th~ Standard Project Flood would over- <br />top the roadway by 5.2 feet, while ths Intermediate Regionol Flood <br />",ould leck 0.9 fBet of ov~~topping tho driving a"rfacs. In tho upper <br />portion of the ~tudy reach, above ~ile 1.52 (approximately 0.7 <br />rnile~ wpstrsam from 18th Street), development in the flood plain <br />is limited to two bridges, portione of two unimproved ro"d~, and <br />a stock pond.
