CHAPTER V. PROTECTION OF BUILDINGS AND PROPERTY

A. Introduction

As discussed in this report, the debris flows in Glenwood Springs

are of a sufficient magnitude and probability to warrant structural protection

of buildings and property. This chapter discusses some specific defense

measures that could be used be!ow ~ three ~Eainage E.asin~ !ltud~ed. However

the defenses recommended here cannot be applied in blanket fashion to other

areas within the town. Because other ba:sins may produce flows or floods

with entirely different characteri.stics, the specific defenses recommended

1n this study are not applicable and could even incE',,-as~ the hazard severity

if applied in these other areaE.

I do not believe the defenses recOIlIDended can provide 'O"-~I'le~~ protection

because future flows may di.ffer somewhat from those recently observed.

However, if the recommendati"ns at e care fully appl ied they should result

'in a structural defense system ~bich will greatly reduce the potential

damage from future flows and can help in restoring peace of mind to residents

in areas exposed to the hazard.

-- 32 --
