Whitewater Boating Association

MODEL STUDY

The approved alternative from the September 1988 CWCB meeting was used as the basis
for the layout of the 1:18 scale model constructed and tested by personnel of the U.S.
Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) in the federal hydraulics laboratory located at the Denver
Federal Center.

The model represents the river upstream and downstream of the Union Avenue bridge, the
modifications to the existing USACE dam, and the first embankment downstream of the
dam.

The results of the model study are presented in a report by the USBR. The USBR model
study, with inputs from the independent entities, refined and quantified many parameters
which resulted in numerous and positive improvements and modifications to the layout
approved in September 1988. Model studies resulted in resolving numerous questions on
hydraulics and sediment raised by Englewood.

Some of the subjects discussed in the USBR report include:

1. Refinements to the boatchute configuration for improved
boatability.

2. Reduction in quantity of rock and fill material on the face of
the existing USACE dam.

3. Elimination of the need to raise the inner wall downstream of
the radial gate associated with the Englewood water supply
intake structure.
