Union Avenue Boatchute Model

On March 9, Mr. Ferguson of Wright Water Engineers met with the Platte River Project
Manager, Bob Buchholz of the USACE, at the USBR labs to view the model. Also in .
attendance were Greg Moore (USACE-Denver), Cliff Pugh, Jerry Fitzwater, and Cassie ~
Klump (USBR). -

The model and its operation was observed at 300 cfs and 1000 cfs. Video tapes were also It
viewed of the 50 and 100 year flood flows. ~

Mr. Buchholz asked many questions pertaining to construction, materials, flows, and general
observations. He stated he had viewed the tapes of the January 18 demonstration and
approved the layout and concepts. A USACE letter was being processed containing several
questions. When that letter is received, the questions should be ignored because Mr.
Buchholz said a1l are now answered to his satisfaction. He is satisfied with the proposed
layout and its ability to convey flood flows.

Mr. Buchholz believes that the USBR model reliably represents the river and dam at
Union Avenue and that the hydraulic evaluation by the USBR is satisfactory. Further, he
was impressed with the technical work on the model construction. He feels that the 100
year flow wi1l be adequately handled without creating flow problems.

Mr. Moore of the USACE indicated that the present dam boatchute configuration
represents a marked improvement over the January 18, 1989 configuration which had
evolved from prior trial layouts.

The conclusions reached at the model viewing and hydraulic operation are:

1) USACE objectives are being met.

2) Flood characteristics will be satisfactory.

3) USACE questions have been resolved.
