ANNUAL COMPILATION AND ANALYSIS OF HYDROLOGIC
DATA FOR URBAN STUDIES IN THE DALLAS, TEXAS
METROPOLITAN AREA
1971

By

B. C. Massey

INTRODUCTION

Hydrologic investigations of urban watersheds in Texas were be-
gun by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1954. These studies are now in
progress in Austin, Dallas, Dallas County, Fort Worth, Houston, and
San Antonio.

In August 1961, the Geological Survey in cooperation with the
city of Dallas began a program of investigations designed to evaluate
hydrologic factors affecting floods on several small streams in Dallas.
Through cooperative agreements with the city of Dallas and the Dallas
County Department of Public Works, the original program has been expanded
to include the greater Dallas metropolitan area. The objectives of
the Dallas area program are:

1. To determine, on the basis of historical data and hydro-
logic analyses, the magnitude, frequency, and areal
extent of flooding.

2. To document and define floods of greater than ordinary
magnitude.

3. To determine the effect of urban development on flood
peaks and volume.

Purpose and Scope of this Basic-Data Report

The purpose of this report is to present the compilation and analy-
sis of hydrologic data collected in urban or partly urban drainage
basins in the Dallas, Texas, metropolitan area during the 1971 water
year.

To facilitate the publication and distribution of this report
at the earliest feasible time, certain material included herein does
not conform to the formal publication standards of the U.S. Geological
Survey.

-1-
