of 51 dBZ for all available gauge data. Open circles are associated with the PPS run in which the

existing method for forming pairs was used. Filled circles are assoCiated with the PPS run in

which the gauge-radar pairs were formed using the 3x3 center bin. In both cases the center radar

bin was paired with the gauge observation and plotted.

Fig. 12. Log-log scatter plots of storm-total gauge-radar pairs for four different rain rate

thresholds corresponding to 49,51,53, and 55 dBZ. Symbols are defined in Table 2. The radar

estimates used for each pair includes a) the center of the 3x3 bins surrounding the gauge location,

b) the average of the 3x3 bins, and c) the estimate that would be chosen by the existing algorithm

to be used in the Adjustment algorithm. The radar estimates have not been adjusted by any bias

estimates.

Fig. 13. Time series plots of hourly gauge-radar bias estimates from the Adjustment algorithm

for the case of maximum rain rate thresholds corresponding to a) 49 dBZ, b) 51 dBZ, and c) 53

dBZ. The gauge-radar pairs used as input into the algorithm are formed using the existing

methodology for determining which radar estimate of the 3x3 array to choose.

Fig. 14. Time series plots of basin-maximum (dotted lines) and basin-averaged (solid lines)

values of a) reflectivity, b) rain rate, c) one-hour rainfall, and d) storm-total rainfall. Rainfall in
this figure has not been adjusted by any bias estimates. The dashed lines in (a) and (b) represent
the equivalent maximum rain rate thresholds of 51 dBZ and 74.7 mm h", respectively. The
dashed line in (c) represents the one-hour Flash Flood Guidance rainfall.
33
