,'; '~;ecejent rains began on May 22, 1965, with as much as 2.68 in of rain reported for a single
::2\' Ju~e Land 5 were days of moderate rainfall, and light rain fell on the June 15, On June: 6,
n.,avy rains in basins to the north set off record floods in the Platte River tributaries, Northeast
c/ Colorado Springs, rainfall amounts that exceeded all previous records were recorded, Fourteen
Inches of rain were reported in the Palmer Ridge area, just north of the headwaters of Jimmy
Camp Creek, This tremendous amount of rain fell in approximately 4 h [20J.

The storm cells that developed on the afternoon of June 17, caused heavy rains in the headwaters
0; some streams for a second consecutive day. The rain gauge near Fountain recorded over 5 in
of rain in 2 h, ending about 1 :00 p,m, No gauges existed in the Jimmy Camp Creek Basin, but
the peak flow at the measurement point was believed to have occurred about 1 :30 p.m.

The peak measurement was made by the USGS, using slope-area measurement techniques, at a
site approximately 4.5 mi upstream from the confluence of Jimmy Camp Creek with Fountain
Creek. The drainage basin has an area of 54.3 mi2'and extends to elevations above 6800 h, The
stream slope averages 73 h/min. ' h ",'

Lag times were computed based on theoretical equations because no information was available
on the actual time distribution of the rainfall that occurred in the basin, Using a C value of 1,2,

180
160
"0
"
~
u
IS) 120
IS)
IS)
W 100
15
'"
a:
I
u 80
U1
H
t:1
"- 6"
0
W
f-
a:
'" 40
20
r e
I
I
,
I
!
I
!
I
L-

2213 I
I

PHF PEAK ~ 191000 Cr~

~ 1
l I \
~ ! \
f I \
i j \

r / \
!
