ENVIRONMENTAL
ACTIVITIES

In fiscal year 1974. draft environmental
statements were initiated on Jensen
Unit of the Central Utah Project, and
on Dallas Creek. Dolores, and Fruitland
Mesa Projects in western Colorado.
Draft environmental statements were
completed and filed with the Council on
Environmental Quality; for Utah Power
and light Company's second unit of
Huntington Canyon Generating Station:
and for the proposed sale of 125.000
acre. feet of municipal and industrial
water from Fontenelle Reservoir to the
Stale of Wyoming.

Studies were mitiated to determine the
environmental impacts on archeology,
fish. wildlife. recreation, and aesthetics
of alternative dam and reservoir sites
for China Meadows Reservoir on the
Lyman Project.

The Bureau of Reclamation will be the
lead Federal agency in the writing of

6

the environmental statements for both
EI Paso Natural Gas Company and
Western Gasification Company. Water
wIll be supplied from the Navajo Reser-
voir to both 01 these coal gasification
plants in the Four Corners area. The
statements are well on their way to
completion.

The Upper Colorado Region is assisting
the Bureau of Land Management in
review and preparation of draft envi.
ronmental statements on proposals for
coal.fired, thermal.electric generating
stations at Kaiparowits, Emery, Warner
Valley, and Intermountain Power Proj.
ect sites in the State of Utah.

On the Seedskadee Project, releases
from Fontenelle ReserVOIr were regu.
lated to allow Fish and Wildlife Service
and the State of Wyoming to conduct
studies to determine the effects of var.
ious riverflows on downstream fishing.
It was concluded from these studies
that a joint Department of the Interior.
State of Wyoming reservoir operating
plan will have to be formulated for
Fontenelle Reservoir each year for the
ensuing years, which will have as one
of its objectives the enhancement of
stream fishery, provided such regulation
does not interfere with other water
rights on the river.

REVEGETATION

A major revegetation effort was under-
taken on the Bonneville Unit of areas
previously disturbed by construction of
Starvation Dam, Soldier Creek Dam,
Water Hollow, and layout Creek Tun.
nels. Eight hundred sixty. six acres of
land were seeded to a variety of
grasses, with a portion of that area also
planted with shrubs. A portable irriga.
tion system was acquired. set up, and
operated at the Starvation Reservoir
area to assist in the revegetation effort.
