CD12

Check Dams

DESCRIPTION:

Check dams are a series of drop structures which are placed across channels to
retard flow velocities, control erosion, and settle out sediment.

Check dams can be constructed of gabions, logs or rocks and should be checked for
sediment accumulation after each significant rainfall. Sediment should be removed
when it has reached one-half of the original dam height.

Regular inspections should be conducted to ensure that sediment is removed and that
the center of the dam remains lower than the edges.

Although placement and sizing of check dams should be based on prevailing
hydrologic conditions, examples of various check dams and normal spacing
information is attached,

Woodw.nl-Clycle eonsult8nts

S:\OES\SPECSIIT
