sections, the bounda~ies were interpolated. In cases where the
boundaries of the floodway and the 100-year flood are either close
together or collinear, only the floodway boundary has been sho\vn.

The area between the floodway and the boundary of the 100-year
flood is termed the floodway fringe. The floadway fring'o thus
encompasses the portion of the flood plain that could be completely
obstructed without increasing the water-surface elevation of the
100-year flood more than 1.0 foot at any point. Typical relation-
ships between the floodway and the fl(X)d1N'ay fringe ann their sig'lif-
icance to flood plain develo;>ment are sholm in Figure 3.

I t

100 vE:Ar~ f I O()(") plJ\lr,,-.

-I

r LCH 'OliVA v
f K \ ~j,~, f

r L(', dl'hA Y

FL(I"lDW('l,Y......j
f f,IN'.,,[

ST "f ~f\,'
C fj "" i ~~ E L.

FL'!"U f....f '.-ATI~)".J WHt-_';
C'.1~,rl'\lF[. ......iTHlh FLn(JOWAr

'JCi'lOACH"-~Fr-;T

o

s~c~">~c~

0./-
B

AREA OF FLOOD F'lA ~ THAT COUL='
BE ~15E:) FOR DEvELOPMENT 8Y
RAISING GROUND

FI.OOD L LE .-'ATJU'"
BEFORE" [....CROA,CH~E I\lT
ON FLOOD PLAIN

LINE AS IS THE FLOOD ELEVATION BEFORE Er\tCROACHMt'NT.
LINE CD IS THE FLOOD ELEVATION AfTER ENCROACHMENT
.SURCHARGE ISNOTTOEXCEED 1,0 FOOT (FEMA REQUIREMENT) OR LESSER AMOuNT IF SPECIFIED BY STATE.

Figure 3.

Floodway Schematic

5 . 0 .l~~URAN~E APP LI CATION

In ordeR:" to establish actuarial insurance rates, the Fedet"al Emergency
Management Agency has developed a process to transf~rm the data from
the eng ineer ing study into flood insurance cr iter- ia.
