Provisional streamflow data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) for Fountain
Creek taken near Colorado Springs, Janitell Road below Colorado Springs, the town of Security,
near the City of Fountain, near the town of Pinon and at Pueblo betwe,~n April 25, 1999 and May
15, 1999 are provided in Appendix A of this report. Provisional strearnflow data from the USGS
for the Arkansas River at Avondale and Las Animas is also included for the same period. In
addition, provisional streamflow data from the USGS for the Huerfano River near Boone, the
Apishapa River near Fowler, and the Purgatoire near Las Animas are included in Appendix A.
The data provides the mean streamflow for eacn day. The relatively high mean streamflow on
Fountain Creek indicates the flood produced a nigh volwne causing the abnormally high levels
of streambank erosion along the creek.

Table 3-1 shows staff gauge data taken from La Junta and Las Animas. The data shows the
movement of the crest. Table 3-2 shows estim<tted peak flows on the Purgatoire River at
Trinidad (Corps of Engineers gage), Thatcher (USGS gage), and below Trinidad Dam. No
releases were made from Trinidad Dam during the event.

TABLE 3-1

STAFF GAUGE DATA FROM ARKANSAS IUVER AT
LA JUNTA AND LAS ANIMAS

Location
La Junta

Las Animas

Date-Time
1 May 99@ 1400 hrs
2 May 99 @ 0900 hrs
2 May 99 @ 1100 hrs
3 May 99 @ 11 00 hrs
4 May 99@ 1100 hrs
5 May 99 @ 1100 hrs
6 May 99@ 1I00hrs

I May 99 @ 1100 hrs
2 May 99 @ 1100 hrs
2 May 99@2100hrs
3 May 99 @ 1100 hrs
4 May 99 @ 1100 hrs
5 May 99 @ 1100 hrs
6 May 99 @ 1100 hrs

Post Flood Assessment Report

Staff Gauge
12.25
15.14 (peak)
15.04
12.36
(Not reporting)
(Not reporting)
(Not reporting)

9.50
11.75
13.99 (peak)
12.59
10.60
9.89
8.97

17

Chapter 3 - Flood of April 29, 1999
Draft Revised 09/09/99
