<br />I. INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />Stabilizing banks of meandering streams and rivers can be a major problem. Where bank <br />cutting may cause severe damage to property or loss of valuable farmland, the problem may <br />require attention. <br /> <br />The Rock Island District recently conducted a study to determine the feasibi I 'ty of <br />providing bank erosion control measures along the Des Moines River In Iowa and Missouri. <br />Th I 5 S6 I f-he I p brochure has been prepared as a resu I t of th I 5 study to prov I de techn lea I <br />guidance to local government officials and landowners interested in constructing bank <br />erosion control measures. <br /> <br />Work in the "Waters of the United States" requires a permit from the Corps of Engineers. <br />Each case is reviewed by State and Federal agencies concerned, especially for environmental <br />considerations. Certain bank protection measures may be more suitable than others from an <br />environmental view. Early coordination with the Corps of Engineers may help avoId <br />environmental problems. <br /> <br />. <br />
