4.10

. Flood Insurance Study. Town of TellUlr'ide~ San MiQuel Counj;y (FIA, 1978).
Hydrologic analyses were conducted as part of this study to establish the
peak di scharge-frequency re 1 at i onshi ps for floods wi th rE!CUrrence i nterva 1 s of
10, 50, 100, and 500 years. Since Cornet Creek is ungaged, the Soil Conserv-
ation Service curve number method (SCS, 1975) was used. Peak discharges along
Cornet Creek identified for each of the selected recurrence interval s are
summarized on Table 4.1. A discharge of 1,500 cfs was also identified in this
study for a mud flow with a 100-year return period. This value was estimated
by assuming a 20 percent water content by wei~lht in the mud flow.
. Telluride. Colorado. Drainaqe Master _Plan (Dibble & Associates, 1983a).
Thi s study i nvo 1 ved the development of a master dra i nage plan for the town.
The investigation focused on street drainage within town limits. Quantities and
direction of flow were tabulated and depicted graphically. Peak runoff
discharges were determined for 10- and 25-year return period events by use of
the Rational Method. A summary of peak discharges at various concentration
points along the Cornet Creek is presented in Table 4.2.
The 25-year return period peak discharge is compared to that given in the
1978 FIS. The values calculated by the Rational Method were approximately 32
percent greater than the FIS flow values. The difference in peak discharge ~as
cited in the report to be an acceptable approximation cons -ideri ng that the
Rational Method tends to over-estimate flows from drainagEs signHicantly greater
than 200 acres (the drainage area of Cornet Creek being approximately 1,540
acres). As seen in Table 4.2, no explanation was provided in the report for
the di screpancy in the peak flow est imated at the northern town boundary and
downstream concentration points within the town.
. Colorado
(Dibble & Associates, 1983b).
The objective of this study was to evaluate debris and flood-control
problems along Cornet Creek. The report included a description of the hydrologic
setting and historic flood problems along CornEt Creek, a review of the results
of the 1978 FIS for the town, and the results of backwater computations along
Cornet Creek for the 10-, 25-, 50-, 100-, and 500-year FIS peak fl ows. A
recommended plan for debris and flood control along th,~ str€!am included the
following considerations:
