They are irregular because bridges and low channel banks are
allowing flows to escape and later retwn to the channel.
These are desigu discharges that are contained within the improved channel with the detention pond in place.
They are regular and increase in the downstream direction lUltil flow is lost into the detention area.
This represents the approximate location of the detention pond and channel realigmnent options.

..

...

3.3.4 It is clear from the tables above that the detention pond would relieve pressure on
the downstream bridges. Also, the detention pond in combination with the channel realignment
and improvements would allow more channel capacity upstream.

4. CONCLUSIONS

This study focused on providing technical information to the City of Sterling in regard to flood
reduction measures along Pioneer Ditch. Several measures/alternatives were identified: a detention
pond, a channel improvement option, and some bridge improvements/replacements. Although
Sterling is flooded by Sand Creek and Pawnee Creek overflows, these alternatives were designed
based on the future conditions 10-year local drainage flood described in the 1988 report by
Charles F. Leaf (reference 2.3).

13
