/

.

'L-- ;-S- (

,

HYDROLOGIC ADDENDUM
SOUTH ARKANSAS RIVER

I. PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The purpose of this brief report is to present the hydrologic analysis

[or the South Arkansas River floodplain study. It is assumed that the

hY4rology st~dy prepared by Water Resources Consultants, Incorporated for the

South Arkansas/Poncha Creek floodplain report is valid for the upper limits

of this study. The hydrologic investigation herein is intended to assess

the impact of the additional tributary area to the mouth of the South

Arkansas River.

Of primary concern is the potential of rainfall generating flood peaks

in the lower portion of the basin. This potential must be evaluated to

determine if the peak flow-area-frequency curves derived in the previous

study are also valid for this reach of the South Arkansas River.

II. PREVIOUS STUDY (South Arkansas River/Poncha Creek)

Extensive studies of the hydrology of the area were prepared by WRC, Inc.

and approved by the Colorado Water Conservation Board for the floodplain

information report for the South Arkansas River and Poncha Creek at Poncha

Springs. Four different methods were used to compute peak flows. These

methods include:

.

1. U.S. Geological Survey Regional Analysis

2. Regional Statistics/Log Pearson

3. Regional Log Pearson Type III Analysis

4. Technical Manual No. I

-1-
