<br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />CHAPTER 4 <br /> <br />Durango, Colorado Floods of July 23rd and August 3rd, 2002 <br />Missionary Ridge Burn Area <br /> <br /> <br />Introduction <br /> <br />On Tuesday, July 23rd and Saturday, August 3"1, <br />two separate stonns produced moderate <br />amounts of rainfall that fell on the Missionary <br />Ridge Burn area. The town of Durango <br />Colorado, and it's surrounding area, <br />experienced mild flooding and several <br />mudslides as a result of the storms. According <br />to various sources, as much as lA8 inches of <br />rain fell on July 23'd, and as much as 0.8 <br />inches of frecipitation was recorded for the <br />August 3' event. Most of the reported storm <br />damage was minor to moderate. Several county roads had to be closed during and after <br />the events due to mudslides and flooding in low-lying areas where the rainwater <br />collected. <br /> <br />Figure 4.1 - La Plata County Location In the <br />State of Colorado. <br />Map courtesy of the Colorado Herpetological Society. <br /> <br />Location and Description <br /> <br />Durango, Colorado is located approximately l86 miles southwest of Pueblo, at the <br />intersection of U.S. Highway l60 and U.S. Highway 550 in La Plata County (see Figure <br />4.3 on the next page). According to the 2000 Census, the city of Durango's population is <br />I 3,922 out of a total county population of 43,94l (U.S. Census Bureau, "Factfinder" <br />website).
