The County Seat is located in Glenwood Springs, which is
approximately 27 miles to the east along 1-70.

I

The town of Rifle lies within the Colorado Headwaters-Plateau watershed along with
several other towns and cities including Grand Junction (see Figure 2.2 on previous
page). Most of this watershed lies within the state of Colorado with some small areas
crossing into Utah. Downstream of this watershed is the Westwater Canyon watershed.
Upstream watersheds include the Lower Gunnison, Colorado Headwaters and several
others.

I

I
I

~-- -

t
.At

I

I

I

I

I

-

I

,y
~"".ab

I

t..,
~{;),'~~

I

I

Figure 2.3 - Map of Rifle, Colorado in Relation to the Front Range Area.

I

Storm Characteristics and Information

I

Obtaining rainfall information and storm characteristics for the two storms in Rifle was
difficult. Since the two storms occurred right after one another, most contacts could not
separate defining traits of each storm. In most cases, information could be obtained about
one storm but not the other. In addition, since the storms did not cause significant damage
to the town of Rifle or any injuries, no federal flood mitigation was necessary.

I

I

ICON Eng:neering. lnc

10

January 2003
