I. INTRODUCTION
The Town of Telluride, Colorado, is located in San Miguel County,
Colorado, near the headwaters of the San Miguel River. The San tiliguel River
flows through the southern portion of the Town of Telluride. Th,= Town is a
participant of the National Flood Insurance Regular Program, The flood boun-
daries and profiles of the San Miguel River were determined in an engineering
study completed in 1977 (Reference 1) and ,adopted by the Town, the Colorado
\jater Conservation Board (eWCB), and the F,ederal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA) in 1978 (Reference 2).
Since the effective date of the Tellul"ide Flood Insurance Study (1978)
Inny changes have occurred to the physical surround'ings of the San Miguel
River. The Town selected the engineeY'ing firm of Simons, Li & Associates,
Inc. (SLA) to perform hydraulic calculations to account for all changes to the
floodplains and flood profiles of the San Miguel River.
The purpose of the study was to provide updated floodplain information
that takes into account the cumulative effects of floodplain modifications
that have occurred since 1978 and to provide the Town with an effective means
of regulating future flood fringe development.
The scope of this study included hydraulic computations to determine
water surface profiles for the 10-, 50-, 100-, and 500-year floods; deter-
mination of 100- and SOO-year floodpla,in boundaries and det.ermination of
100-year floodway boundari es. Additi onal study tasks i ncl uded preparati on of
a report, technical addendum, and fl oodpl ai n maps and water surfacE~ profil es.
