" <br /> <br />Flood of June 7, 1948 - Rocky Mountain News, June 8, 1948 <br />HEADLINE: "Golden Flash Flood Damage Near $500,000" <br /> <br />"A cloudburst in the mountains northwest of Golden sent a 25 foot <br />wall of water flashing down normally dry Tuckers Gulch through the <br />northern section of Golden early yesterday causing damage estimated <br />at between a quarter and a half mill ion dollars." <br /> <br />Flood of June 25, 1941 - Jefferson County Republican, June 26, 1941 <br /> <br />HEADLINE: "Golden Visited By Biggest Flood in Forty-five Years" <br /> <br />"A rain in the mountains to the north and west of Golden was estimated <br />at from two to five inches and came within about a thirty-minute period. <br />Soon afterwards Clear Creek, Tucker Gulch and its tributaries were <br />raging torrents washing everything in its path..." <br /> <br />"In northeast G,olden, one family was driven from their home, many others <br />were put on guard to protect their property, at least two bridges were <br />washed out, including the tramway bridge on 44th,..." <br /> <br />".. .Many of the homes in the Tucker Gulch section were 1 ittered with <br />debris and 9iven a nice coating of mud. City street employees are <br />credited with hauling 153 loads of mud from one block on 9th street, <br />between Jackson and Ford. As the water left the banks of Tucker Gulch. <br />it quickly filled the basement home of the Oppen1ander family who <br />escaped by crawl i ng out of a window..." <br /> <br />"As the water reached sufficient heighth it overflowed into Ford street, <br />some turned west on 9th, then south on Washington across the corner of <br />the park, across the lawn of the Nazarene church and on into Clear Creek..." <br /> <br />".. .Just below the Coors greenhouse, four head of cattle and a brown <br />bear were washed upon shore, evidently they had come from several miles <br />upstream. <br /> <br />"A 1 though no one was reported kill ed or injured seri ous1y, three <br />small houses and two railway and three automobile bridges were <br />washed away, basements flooded and lawns and streets covered with <br />tons of silt and debris." <br /> <br />"The stream in the canon (sic). normally only a trickle, soon was out of <br />its banks and washed out state highway 58 in several places. <br /> <br />Another wall of water poured down Crawford's Gulch into Golden Gate Canon <br />(sic) and then on to the outskirts of Golden where a third normally dry <br />gulch, Christman (sic) Gulch, poured additional water into the stream. <br /> <br />The water from the three streams poured into Tucker's Gulch and backed <br />up behind a bridge carrying the railway spur to the Golden Fire Brick <br />Co. plant, north of town. <br /> <br />When the bridge was washed out, the wall of water swept on down, carry- <br />ing out the second railway bridge, the three automobile bridges and the <br />ma in gas 1 i ne of the Colorado Wyomi ng Gas Co...." <br /> <br />"Old timers in Golden were in disagreement as to whether yesterday's <br />flood was worse than the one in 1896." <br /> <br />- Jefferson County Republican, June 9, 1948 <br /> <br />"...A1though two houses were swept from their foundations and dissolved <br />in the roaring torrent and many thousands ,of dollars damage was done <br /> <br />4 <br />
