I,
~

~:
~
!
!

In addition to variations in duration and depth of rainfall !
in this region, intensity of precipitation is a consideration .
because of the influence of the highly variable topography
encompassed in the study area. The portions of Teller and El
Paso County lying easterly of the 8,000 foot elevation contour !
are primarily affected by thunderstorm events. The westerly
portions typically experience less intense storms. The Soil
Conservation Service has developed three storm types from NOAA I
data; Type I, II and IIA. Type I is not applicable to any of __
the area in Colorado. Type IrA is assumed to be typical or- --- --- ,,'
thunderstorm type precipitation events and is used east of the I
8,000 foot elevation contour. Type II is assumed to be a
general type storm and will be applied to those areas lying b
west of the 8,000 foot elevation contour in the study area.
The effects of the increased intensity from Type IIA storms I
is discussed in Section III-RUNOFF. Should a statistically significant sample of data
be available for other areas in the reg~on, depth-duration curves
can be developed for other locations.
