B. Wind Erosion

wind erosion can also be estimated with techniques developed
by the Soil Conservation Service. The factors influencing wind
erosion can be expressed by the equation:

E = f (IKCLV)

where:

E = the computed average annual soil 10ss-,--tons/~Ccre;
year

f = "a function of"

I = the soil erodibility index, tons/acre/year, where
C = 100 (See Table V-4)

K = the soil surface roughnes~ factor, to account
for ridged or smooth surface conditions

C = the climatic factor, to account for typic_aL-soiT
moisture and wind speed (See Figure V-4)

L = unsheltered length across an area in the direction
of prevailing winds

v = the soil cover factor, to account for quantity,
kind, and orientation of the residue. Figure V-5
relates soil cover to an equivalent amount, in
pounds per acre, of flat small grain residue.

Values of W.E.G.
S.C.S. soils types in
Appendix A.

(Wind Erodibility Groups) for specific
El Paso and Teller counties are listed in

Table V-5 is a listing of soil loss, E, based on the above
factors and a C value of 50.

C. Control Measures

Appendix A also lists a "T" factor for each soil series.
This factor indicates a limit, in tons per acre per year, of
allowable soil loss. This limit is defined as the maximum rate
of erosion which would allow crop production to continue econo-
mically and indefinitely. Although this limiting criterion is
based on crop production, water quality benefits would be realized
by meeting similar limits.

Principles of soil erosion are as follows:

62

II
u

I
I
I
I
1-

-

I
I
----I~
II
,.

I
II
I
,
I:
L:

I
!I
!
I
e!
