<br />Issue C-3: Public Information <br />Background: Visitors to and residents of Colorado need Lo be aware of daily wildfire <br />danger and where they can obtain more infonnation abouL fire dangers. The National <br />Weather Service provides all news media with daily sLatements from June through <br />October about fire dangers in Colorado, <br /> <br />Action Element: Increase use of messages to visitors and residents abouL fire danger <br />infonnation year,round as needed. SuggesLed fire safety infonnation measures: <br />1. Designate a local 24,hour radio{TV station Lo disseminate fire danger <br />infonnation and special warning messages. <br />2. Advertise stations the public should listen to for fire danger infonnation and <br />wamings. <br />3, Have brochures available in motels, hotels, chambers of commerce, visiLor <br />centers. <br />4. Print wildfire emergency information in local telephone books. <br />5. Print wildfire safety messages on local supennarket grocery bags during fire <br />season. <br />6. Display wildfire danger messages on digital highway infonnation signs. <br /> <br />Agencies: City and county emergency services, fire deparunents */* National Weather <br />Service, Colorado State Forest Service, Colorado Deparunent of Transportation, Office <br />of Emergency Management, chambers of commerce, federal land management agencies. <br /> <br />Estimated Costs: Ranges from no cost LO $7,000 per activity. <br /> <br />Funding Sources: Local sources, news media, businesses. <br /> <br />Schedule: Immediate and ongoing. <br /> <br />Issue C-4: Evacuation Plans <br />Background: EvacuaLion plans and procedures utilized during past wildfires were <br />unclear, Hazardous wildfire areas exisL in many counties. <br /> <br />Action Element: Develop evacuation plans for each high hazard area in Colorado to <br />address: <br />1. <br />2. <br />3. <br /> <br />Methods of notification and evacuation. <br />Identification of shelters. <br /> <br />Identification of families of those firefighters participaLing in fire control <br />activities; address their special needs. <br />Procedures to deal with residents who were gone at start of incident and are <br />concerned about their families or property. <br />Procedures for re-entry into incidenL area by residents and emergency response <br />personnel. <br />6. CoordinaLion with issue C,5 (Resident Warnings). <br /> <br />Agencies: County and ciLy emergency offices, sheriffs */* Office of Emergency <br />Management. <br /> <br />Estimated Costs: Staff time. <br /> <br />Funding Sources: Normal program funding. <br /> <br />Schedule: <br /> <br />5. <br /> <br />4. <br /> <br />Identification of hi2h hazard areas - six months from start <br />Plan develonment - one year from start. <br /> <br />27 <br />
