<br />1.3 Coordination <br /> <br />On January 12, 1984, Dames & Moore was instructed by FEMA to proceed <br />with an existing data study for the Town of Hotchkiss, Colorado, <br />using the detailed study data for North Fork Gunnison River from <br />the Delta County, Colorado, Flood Insurance Study. <br /> <br />Representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento <br />District; Colorado Water COnservation Board; FEMA; U.3. G~olo9ical <br />Survey; and Colorado Department of Highways were contacted and <br />supplied information used in the preparation of the Delta County, <br />Colorado, Flood Insurance Study. <br /> <br />The final community meeting was held on August 1, 1984, and was <br />attended by representatives of the Colorado Water Conservation <br />Board, the community, and FEMA. All problems concerning this study <br />have been resolved. <br /> <br />2.0 ARE~ STUDIED <br /> <br />2.1 Scope of Study <br /> <br />This Flood Insurance Study covers the incorporated areas of the <br />Town of Hotchkiss, Delta County, Colorado. The area of study is <br />shown on the Vicinity Map (Figure 1). <br /> <br />North Fork Gunnison River was studied by detailed methods where it <br />flows through the Town of Hotchkiss. <br /> <br />The areas studied by detailed methods were selected based on the <br />extent and validity of available hydrologic and hydraulic data. <br /> <br />2.2 Community Description <br /> <br />The Town of Hotchkiss is located in the east-central <br />Delta County, in the southwest portion of Colorado. <br />bordered by unincorporated areas of Delta County. <br /> <br />portion of <br />The town is <br /> <br />The Ute Indians were the earliest residents of western Colorado. <br />In 1868, the Utes were put on a reservation which included Delta <br />County and the surrounding area. This reservation was dissolved <br />by an 1880 treaty which moved the Ute Indians to a new reservation <br />in northeastern Utah. On September 1, 1881, the old Ute Indian <br />reservation was opened for resettlement (Reference 2). <br /> <br />Mining and agriculture comprise the economic base for the Town of <br />Hotchkiss. <br /> <br />2 <br />
