APPENDIX D .
Calculational Procedures for
Elevated Foundation Design

As presented in Chapter IV, the minimum recommended design criteria are based on design condi-
tions and data appropriate for the context of the manual. The intent of Chapter IV is to show the selec-
tion of elevated foundation components and materials that when assembled would provide sufficient
design capacity to withstand the anticipated loads. Recognizing that such a presentation reduces the
applicability to certain possible design conditions, this appendix provides the calculational procedures
used as a basis in the manual. For ease of use and consistency with the manual, the presentation in
this appendix follows the outline of Section B of Chapter IV.
For the purposes of this appendix, the following terminology is applicable.

Ac = Vertical member area (in2)

Af = Floor area (ft2)

An = Total net area of wood member (in2)

Ap = Pier area (in2)

Ar = Roof area including eaves (ft2)

a = Chassis I-beam spacing (in)

Cs = Lag screw pullout capacity (Iblin)

Di = Dead load of manufactured home (psf)

d = Vertical member diameter (in)

E = Modulus of elasticity (psi)

e = Distance from center to center of chassis I-beam to vertical member (in)

Fb = Bending stress (psi)

F'b = Bending stress (psi) corrected for conditions of service

Fe = Compressive strength of wood (psi)

F'c = Compressive strength of wood (psi) corrected for conditions of service

Ff = Floor live load of manufactured home (psI)

Fr = Load per vertical member where roof load governs (Ib)

Ft = Allowable working stress of wood in tension (psi)

Fw = Load per vertical member where wind load governs (Ib)

f'm = Concrete strength (psi)

h = Outside height of manufactured home including perimeter rail and chassis I-beam
(ft)

L = Outside length of manufactured home (ft)

Lp = Lag screw penetration length (in)

Lw = Vertical load due to wind (Ib)

i = Total length of vertical member (in)

'1 = Number of vertical members (load points)

P = Vertical member capacity (Ib)

Q = Bolt design capacity (Ib)

Ri = Roof live load (psf)

89
