The following table indicates some of the statistics using
NFIA claim data from October, 1975 through June, 1977.
f (0 'L-
fR.:. 1'/ It? 117.

Actual Cash Actual Cash Ratio of
Value of Value of ACV of Con-
Type of Contents / II Structure/ tents to ACV
Structure of Claims II of Claims of Structure
Single Family Residential
Mobile Home $ 6,197; 132 $13,528; 237 .46
One-story w/basement 14,815;2,153 27,676;3,549 .54
One-story no basement 13,875;3,550 27,480;5,210 .50
Two or more story
w/basement 15,262;2,373 33,354;4,488 .46
Two or more story
no basement 14,885;826 34,610;1,109 .43
Single Family Residential
Total 14,518;9,330* 29,931;14,959* ,49
2-4 Family Residential 17 ,584 ;567 44,865;1,101 .39
Other Residential 12,443;291 140,347;627 .09
Non-Residential (commercial) 54,473;1,931 98,039;1,780 .56

*Includes those for which type of structure was not coded,

The above table shows that for single family residential structures,

the value of contents is about 49% of the structure value, based upon an

analysis of total content and structure value divided by the number of

paid losses. For small business and commercial, the ratio increases to

.about 56%. The content to structure ratio of 49% based upon actual cash

value accounting is believed to be too high by the author. Within this

occupancy category, the number of content claims is 62% of the number of

structure claims. Ideally, for a valid analysis, one should look only

at claims where the property owner had insurance on both contents and

27

-

_, ..~,"",,-_., _, !.".~'"~, o.

-..,~ -':~
